The 2003 North American blackout is a striking instance of a complex
system
undergoing
cascading failure. How likely are large blackouts, how can we analyze
cascading failure, and how do we monitor
blackout risks in complex systems?
Research using methods ranging from power system
engineering and risk analysis to criticality and self organization
gives insights
into these questions.
